I am a big believer in OpenDNS. With children at home, I find it to be an indispensable tool to limit and monitor our kids’ online activity.
I recently upgraded to a Linksys EA6400 wireless access point & router to, among other things, also gain a better handle on managing time-of-day access for the devices on my home network. When children are in bed, they should be in bed reading a book or heading off to sleep, not surfing the Internet!
While you can set up OpenDNS on individual computers (deploying on individual smartphones and tablets is a much trickier matter), isn’t it easier to deploy it on the network so as to impact all connected devices? Yes!
The setup was fairly straightforward. Here are the simple:
Steps to set up OpenDNS on the Linksys EA6400 router / wireless access point
- After you have installed and set up the router, log into your router via https://linksyssmartwifi.com
- Choose “Connectivity” under “Router Settings”
- Choose “Local Network” tab
- Under DHCP Server settings, add entries for “Static DNS 1”, “Static DNS 2” and “Static DNS 3”. These are OpenDNS’ DNS addresses. Use 208.67.222.222 for DNS 1, 208.67.220.220 for DNS 2, and either 208.67.220.222 or 208.67.222.220 for DNS 3.
- Note that DHCP Server should be checked as enabled.
- Click “Apply”.
- That’s it. It worked for me and I hope it works for you.

Actually the linksys EA6400 is a Belkin product. And is no longer owned by Cisco

I thought I’d comment on here, I jest purchased a Linksys 3200acm 3/something/2017 and wow what DNS issues with the stock firmware, first thing I wanted to do is assign a local domain of .lan that’s what I use on my LAN computer1.lan, computer2.lan, server10.lan and NOPE can’t do that no option to hum, then I wanted to use Google DNS 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 NOPE can’t do that either entering DNS addresses as described above oddly assigned LAN domain names from my ISP like computer1.so.what.cloud.is.this.myisp.com to every device, devices connected to the internet and worked but used my ISP’s DNS, Linux systemd transient hostname stuff was not working correctly, yeah don’t buy unless you plan on flashing it 3rd party goodness even that’s not even RC yet no chip-set driver source code, my advice buy a Pfsence box and a cheap router or something to use as a wireless AP only. That’s sure a lot of comas I used,,,
It’s now 2017 and Linksys never did fix this (as of EA6400 firmware 1.1.40.176337 from Oct 2016). Pretty basic functionality broken!!
This does not work due to a bug with Linksys – it remains using your ISP’s DNS server. Try this and find out! Linksys has known about this day-one bug, but has never fixed it. The irony is that Linksys is owned by Cisco and OpenDNS is owned by Cisco.
