Think of Google AdWords like a lifeline. Someone is swimming in the vast sea of the Internet and needs help. They conduct a search. You throw them a line with your ad copy. Google provides search results for free to all users. These include organic search results (the kind you see in the middle of the search results page, with or without a map). These also include paid advertisements above the organic search results and, currently, to the right hand side of the search results page.

Google also distributes those ads throughout an advertising network. So people reading about an item or watching a video related to the service you offer or good you sell may come across an ad for you even when they are not searching for it. And of course, Google, while the biggest, is not the only advertiser with a system like this. Microsoft (Bing) and Facebook have similar programs. One can advertise on Twitter and LinkedIn as well.
You may want to consider making use of paid online advertising. Done sensibly, it’s a great way to get potential customers visiting your website. This can be particularly useful if your SEO efforts are just beginning and your website is not yet showing on Google’s first page of organic results.
