A quick tutorial on how to change WordPress permalink settings and how to change permalinks themselves.

Remember that if you change the permalink of an established post or page (one that has had some traction and viewership), you may want to set up a permanent “redirect” from the old to the new permalink so that visitors to your site don’t get the dreaded 404 “page not found” error.

If you prefer to read rather than watch, here’s how to change permalinks:

  1. Edit the page or post.
  2. Go to the permalink (immediately under the title)
  3. Click on “edit”
  4. Delete part of the permalink you an edit.
  5. Click “OK” button. The new permalink will contain the title’s words separated by hyphens.
  6. Update the post.
  7. If it’s a well-trafficked post, you will want a redirect from the old permalink to the new one.
